When you live in a small-town news travels fast about exceptional new restaurants. Legacy Homestead is most definitely one of them. This week I had the pleasure of stopping in to talk to owner, Tania, and really dive into her journey from tenured nurse to full time owner and operator of this amazing establishment. Please enjoy her story below.

Have you ever wondered how a passion for cooking can lead to a complete lifestyle change? Let's dive into the journey of someone who went from bedside nursing to embracing homesteading and farm-to-table operations.

Health Awakening

Tania, explained that over 15 years ago she had a catering company that was rapidly growing unfortunately due to health issues she had to step away. Due to these health issues there came a pivotal moment where she could see the rapidly changing healthcare system and the profound impact of diet and lifestyle on our well-being.

Embracing Homesteading and Farm-to-Table

As the realization of the importance of fresh, whole foods set in, Tania and her family found themselves drawn to the concept of homesteading and farm-to-table operations. The idea of growing and cooking with ingredients straight from the land ignited a new passion.

Nurturing a Tiny Seed of a Dream

Despite the challenges and doubts, her dream of pursuing a farm-to-table business began to take root. The journey from catering, a career in nursing to homesteading was not an easy one, but the passion for wholesome, sustainable living kept the dream alive.

Grand Opening of Legacy Homestead

By August 2023 she had decided she needed to make this dream a reality and took the bold step to sign the lease!  On November 16, 2024 they celebrated their 1-year anniversary. Tania explained "The growth has been amazing to watch, starting with no staff (other than family) to now 8 additional employees. It's been slow going, but we are growing, and I believe this dream can be everything I hoped for and more. Both of my kids work in the business and dream right alongside me. It's an unbelievable blessing."

What Sets Legacy Apart

Legacy works with around 8 local farms (Miami and Linn counties) to source ingredients whenever they can sometimes that is a lot, sometimes very little.  They have plans to increase their use of local ingredients in the next year and are always looking for local farms to work with. The Farm to Table dinners have been one of our most popular events and they will start again in the spring- they are held May-October.
As our expert's story shows, a passion for cooking can lead to unexpected paths and profound transformations. From catering to homesteading, each step in the journey has shaped a unique perspective on food, health, and caregiving.
